Fendi Couture SS21
The highly anticipated Fendi Spring/Summer 2021 Haute Couture Collection finally debuted at the Palais Brongniart in Paris, and needless to say it did not disappoint. The show showcased fresh new faces such as Lila Moss and Thatcher Royce while also bringing back iconic 90s supermodels, Kate Moss, Christy Turlington Bruns, and Naomi Campbell who all graced the runway in capes and cathedral-length trains.
As the newly appointed artistic director of couture and womenswear for Fendi, Kim Jones made his introduction one to remember. This is the first time in the Houses history that they have ever presented a Spring Couture collection and the first time since the Autumn/Winter collection of 2019 that they have presented in Paris Couture Week. These firsts also mark the new and exciting inauguration of Jones into the world of womenswear, as prior to this collection the infamous designer had never created a full womenswear or couture collection.
The collection oozed regality as the models sauntered slowly down the foggy runway surrounded by a matrix of glass boxes in which each model would find themselves posing in at the end of the show – a symbol of the art-like nature of Jones’s collection. Jones steered Fendi into embracing a more androgynous look as he integrated the structured suits and the flowy liquidity of the déshabillé dresses effortlessly – at some points even combining the two, such as in Adwoa’s look: a collocation of a men’s blazer and an evening gown.
When asked about his debut at Fendi before the show, Jones said: “Fendi is all about family … I am surrounded by strong, powerful women who I love and respect, and want to bring their energy into what I do.”
